Patch Call of Duty to version 1.5

How to properly patch CoD to version 1.5 and how to handle errors during setup

First go here and download the Call of Duty 1.5 Patch

If you have installed CoD from the original CD by completing the setup the installation should be fine and if you run the patch there shouldn't be any errors.
But if you just copied CoD from somewhere or if you downloaded it the registry entries won't be created.
As a consequence the 1.5 Patch won't find the path where CoD is located or it's current version.
This will result in an error during installation of 1.5 Patch.

Keep current CoD version and have 1.5 in addition:

If you want to have both, your current version of the game (e.g. CoD 1.1) and the CoD 1.5 version you need to make a copy of your current CoD folder and rename it to Call of Duty 1.x (replace x with your version.
The other Call of Duty folder will be updated after.

Possible errors and what to do:

"...\Call of Duty\main\pakX.pk3 is not a valid previous version and could not be upgraded."
If this error appears during setup then the named pak pk3 file is corrupted or got edited.
So you need the original stock pk3 files, either by copying them directly from CD into your main folder or get the clean files from internet or friends.
Also check if your Call of Duty folder is write-protected, the patch won't work if it has no rights to update the files.

"Setup did not detect a valid Call of Duty CD Key"
If this happens the registry entries are most likly missing.
Just to make sure check if your CD Key is entered properly. Exit the setup, start CoDMP, go to multiplayer options and verify / reenter the CD Key.
Now start the setup again, if the errors still appears you need to create the registry entries.
If you got the original CD you can simply uninstall CoD and reinstall it again with the setup from CD.
If you don't have the CD you need to create the registry entries manually. Read below.

How to create Registry entries for manual installations of the game
This is for advanced users only! Please do not attempt the below solution if you are not comfortable editing the Registry. Damaging the Registry could be very harmful to your system. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

First make sure the Call of Duty that you want to patch is located in
c:\program files\Activision\Call of Duty
Also check if a cd-key is entered in multiplayer options.

1) Click Start, then Run.
2) At the prompt type "REGEDIT".
3) Click the "+" next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
4) Click the "+" next to SOFTWARE.
5) If you see an Activision folder go to step 8.
6) Right-click on the Software folder and select New, then Key.
7) Name the new folder Activision.
8) Right-click on the Activision folder and select New, then Key.
9) Name the new folder Call of Duty.
10 Select the Call of Duty folder.
11) In the right window pane right-click and select New, then String Value.
12) Name the value "InstallPath" without the quotes.
13) Open the InstallPath string value by double-clicking on it.
14) In the Value data field type "c:\PROGRA~1\Activision\Call of Duty" (without the quotes) then click OK.
15) In the right window pane right-click and select New, then String Value.
16) Name the value "Version" without the quotes.
17) Open the Version string value by double-clicking on it.
18) In the Value data field type "1.1" (without the quotes).

If completed properly you will have a key named "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Call of Duty". This key will have a string value named InstallPath with a data value of "c:\PROGRA~1\Activision\Call of Duty" and a string value named Version with a value of 1.1.

Start 1.5 Patch again, if it was done properly it works now and no other errors should appear.
